Independent experts have advised the government to concentrate on prevention programmes in schools with instructions.
The Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad which has specialized wards and is designated for treatment of the H1N1 cases has recorded five deaths out of the 17 cases it treated last year. Are you an Indian man and your marriage is on rocks?

If you are a man of East Indian origin living in USA married to someone from India, do learn about the potential hell-trip which might come your way:
  1. Did you know that if you and your wife got divorce in USA, it is not recognized in India in 99% of cases? If you remarry with US divorce, Indian authorities will treat it as bigamy which is punishable by 7yrs prison?
  2. Did you know that your wife while sitting in USA can file baseless criminal cases against and cause arrest of your parents, close relatives, distant relatives and friends in India as easily as ordering a pizza?
  3. Did you know that your wife can run with your kids to India and you can never ever get the kids back to USA?
  4. Did you know that your wife can file domestic violence case in India against you even if you never ever visited India with her?
  5. Did you know that even if you are married for a day to your Indian wife, Indian court system will order you to pay her maintenance for rest of your life?
Are you worried? You should be….
For NRI men marrying someone from India is like playing a Russian Roulette.

At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reaching out to the Indian diaspora, some NRIs are claiming they even dread the idea of visiting the country of their origin because of what many of them call "demonic matrimonial laws".

From their passports being impounded to losing their jobs after being stuck in India, at the receiving end of the matrimonial laws, a host of Indian men from across Australia, Britain and the US, as also Europe have now started support groups to counsel each other on how to tackle the issue.

California-based techie Anindya Chatterjee, who runs one such online, has urged amendments in the statute.

"Once a case of 498A (of the Indian Penal Code relating to cruelty) is registered against an NRI, although just an accused, he is treated as a criminal by the police and society. Besides, the law enforcers look at NRIs as easy meat and resort to indiscriminate action like arrests, warrants, look-out notices or impounding passports, which often result in the guy losing his job," Chatterjee told IANS in an email from Los Angeles.

Recently acquitted in a dowry case by a Kolkata court, Chatterjee said his frequent visits to India to attend the proceedings cost him his job with a reputed company and he had to settle for a low-paying job.

Faced with similar ordeals, over 100 men from across Britain have joined Chatterjee's "Justice2NRI.Org" to share their experiences and provide suggestions and advice to each other.

Similar is the plight of London-based IT professional Hardik Mehta, who is now stuck in Mumbai for nearly a year after his wife filed a dowry case.

"While the police are quick to take action even without verifying the veracity of the complaints, the courts, after taking a lifetime, often come to conclusion that the complaints are baseless. The complaint against me was filed in 2008 but the court is still in the process of verifying it. I have lost my job in London and because of the social stigma attached, I am finding it difficult to cope here," Mehta, who too runs a similar group, told IANS in an email.

Many of the NRIs claimed that a broad consensus was growing against marrying Indian women.

"Besides a growing consensus against marrying Indian women, the dread of demonic Indian laws like the Domestic Violence Act or the Dowry Act can be judged from the fact that several embassies including those of the US, Germany and Canada have issued travel warnings," said Satish Babu, a member of the Marital Justice group of Britain-based NRIs.

"It's heartening to see Prime Minister Modi reaching out to the Indian diaspora but he needs to look into the laws that have rendered even the thought of visiting India a dread for us," said Melbourne-based CA Yogesh Gupta who had to shell out Rs.10 lakh as surety to secure bail after he was arrested under the anti-dowry law.

With the number of NRIs facing prosecution steadily increasing in Australia, Deepa Bhatia, whose son is a "victim", has written to Modi urging his intervention.

"A lot of us now refrain from doing business with Indians to avoid travelling to the country which is so dear to us. While many of us are eager to answer Modi's call and contribute towards India's development, he has to look into this issue," Melbourne-based Bhatia, an entrepreneur, told IANS.

Citing the national conviction rate of a measly 15 percent in cases under section 498A, men's rights activist Amit Gupta said it was imperative to make the martial laws gender-neutral to prevent their misuse.

"The misuse of the provision is evident from the fact that the all-India conviction rate for 2013 stood at a mere 15 percent while the police had prrepared charge-sheets in almost 93 percent of the cases," the Delhi-based Gupta told IANS in an email, citing an NCRB report.

"The fact that every eight minutes a married man commits suicide in India reflects the extent of the misuse of the marital laws," said Gupta, convener of the Save India Family Foundation (SIFF), a platform of 50 men's and family rights organisations that has launched an Android Application and toll free helpline for helping out "men in distress".

Ranjana Kumari, the director of the Centre for Social Research, however, was livid at the clamour over the "misuse" of anti dowry laws.

"How can people talk about the misuse of the laws when we still continue to have thousands of dowry deaths every year? Aren't other laws misused? The Income Tax Act or the Companies Act are misused, have they been repealed," Ranjana Kumari asked while speaking to IANS.

"There may be genuine victims, but so long as the social evil of dowry exists and innocent lives succumb to it, the laws will have to be there," she added.

In an unfortunate incident a 42-year-old woman committed suicide in doubtful circumstances. The victim is from Prakasam district, a homeopathy doctor, allegedly committed suicide in California recently.

On the other hand, her family members are suspecting that her husband’s harassment might have forced her to take this extreme step.  Donapati Padmasri from Ardaveedu mandal had married D. Nandakishore Reddy of Giddalur, a software engineer working in California, in 1999.

According to the family, the victim’s family had given Rs 10 lakh as dowry at the time of marriage but Mr Nandakishore had allegedly been harassing his wife for more dowries for a while.

Japan is Most Popular Travel Destination for Asians

Japan has emerged the most popular vacation destination in 2015 for travelers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China in a poll of travel habits in Asia-Pacific.

In a new survey by Travelzoo, which publishes travel deals around the world, 56 percent of Taiwanese respondents said they plan to visit Japan in 2015.

Nearly half of travelers from Hong Kong (49 percent) also said they have their travel sights booked on Japan, as did 40 percent of respondents from mainland China.

For the survey, 4,300 Travelzoo members in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan were polled in November last year.

Australians, it seems, will explore their own country this year with 50 percent of respondents naming Oz as their top vacation destination.

And the US ranked the top destination in 2015 for Japanese travelers.

The survey also revealed that the Chinese will travel the most, taking an average of 6.4 leisure trips in 2015 and spending an average of $8,558 USD.

And while Australian members will travel the least, taking 3.8 trips this year, they will spend the most, dishing out $10,483 on travel this year.

That could be explained by the fact that the US and the UK are the second and third most popular destinations -- expensive long-haul trips for Aussies down under.

Here’s the breakdown of top destinations by markets:

Australia
Australia, 50%
USA 34%
UK 29%

Japan

TCS Sacked Employees Over 'Non-Performance'

India's largest software services provider TCS on Thursday said only 1,000 jobs have been axed in the country due to non-performance, clarifying that this is a part of normal working and not due to any mass restructuring exercise as being speculated.

The Tata-group company said it carries out performance reviews every year, which result in this "involuntary attrition" and added that the overall number of 2,574 includes only 1,000 jobs locally.

"This whole exercise this time has created a lot of noise. That is something for us to think about. If we look at India, it is just a 1,000 people. I don't want to say that it is a restructuring, the business is in such a state that it is restructuring. We are in a normal process. This is a performance exercise. We do it every year, this year also we are doing. Some years we do it at a certain time, some others we do it at a different time. Involuntary attrition at TCS has been about 1 per cent every year in that range and this year, it is no different," TCS CEO N Chandrasekaran told reporters after announcing the company's results.

His global HR head Ajoy Mukherjee chipped in saying these involuntary attritions have been based on performance review which is equally important, and is part of every organization.

"But we will have to think why all this noise," Chandrasekaran said, and adding that there is no truth whatsoever in any rumour about layoffs or restructuring. The company is in a high growth mode and is hiring significantly, which is always done keeping clients, shareholders and employees in mind, he said.

Blaming the social media for the spread of high numbers being floating around, Chandrasekaran said, "It is something for us to think about as there is a learning for us. We have to understand how this social media works when somebody puts up a message, that's some action point we should take as we go forward."

When asked whether TCS would also follow rival Infosys, which had given 3,000 employees with the latest iPhone 6, global HR head Ajoy Mukherjee said TCS has a very strong reward system, some of it is based on quarterly variable, some yearly and it will stick to that.

Chandrasekaran chipped in saying "TCS will give 100 per cent variable pay" as far as this quarter is concerned. The attrition level rose to 13.4 per cent in the December quarter, but TCS said there was no excess link to attrition due to involuntary attrition.

He also said the company does not employ sub-contractors in the country to be laid off.

Stating that the company invests a lot in training its staff, Chandrasekaran, who joined TCS as a trainee, said, "I have built my career going through the same process as any other person would; I have been through the ranks. I can identify myself. We are very sensitive, we invest a lot in training and fundamentally, we look at things from an employee point of view."
